Since the industrial civilization was lead by Watt’s improvement of steam enginein1766. Cournot, a French engineer made the first steam-driven car, in1769.However, its steering system failing in the test run, the car hit the walls of a nearbyarsenal and was destroyed. It was the first motor vehicle accident in the world. Thus, the issue of automobile collision security has been one of the crucial problems whichconstrained vehicle development, since the very beginning of vehicle being made.In recent years, due to the rapid development of automobile industry in China, per capita possession of vehicle has being aroused continually. Meantime, it has leada swift growth of a wide range in vehicle-related sudden accidents. The frontagecollision, the side collision, the rear-end collision and the roll are the most commonaccident types. According to the investigation statistics by Ministry of Public Security, the side collision has approximately composed30%in total. It is that the cross-cuttingtraffic junctions take the primary parts in our country’s urban road. As a result, bothof the incidence of side collision and the rate of disability are the highest, as well asthe rate of mortality is only inferior to frontage collision. Therefore, how to enhancethe vehicles side collision’s security has been an urgent and important issue to vehiclemanufacturers and research institutes. In July,2006China released and carried out the national standardsGB20071-2006,"The protection of the occupants in the event of a lateral collision ".At the same time, the first edition of China New Car Assessment Programme(C-NCAP) was launched by China Automotive Technology&Research Center, which also issued the latest version of C-NCAP in2012. Because of them, higherproduction requirements and security assessment criteria are set for the automobilemanufacturers. This paper is the security improvement research on of a domestic car modelwhich combines the latest side impact request in2012C-NCAP. Firstly, the originalCAD model is discredited to a complete car finite element model. Then a movingdeformable barrier (MDB) model is established and its accuracy is also verified.According to the request of C-NCAP, based on Hypermesh, this article builds up a side collision simulation model. Followed by the simulation result calculated throughLS-DYNA, which is compared with real vehicle collision result, the collisionconsistency of the vehicle simulation and the real vehicle is verified to be highuniformity. Based on the high uniformity, the structure is optimized and improved. Finally, through reasonable design and side structure arrangement, it could absorb anddisperse more collision energies. The calculated simulation result of improved modelmeets the laws and regulations request. As a result, it can partly replace the realvehicle in impact test. Therefore, the development cost and development cycle couldbe reduced enormously.
