With the rapid development of science and technology, the battery life inelectronic device, as well as global environmental issues cause the users greatconcern, making the environment-friendly, high energy density fuel cells todevelop rapidly. Direct methanol fuel cells has a high energy density, security tocarry, simp le composition, and a liquid under normal environmenta l conditions, noexternal power supply, which make the fuel cell candidate to apply to the portableelectronic devices. However, the output I-V characteristic of the fuel cell isdifferent from the tradition battery. With the battery output current increasing, theoutput voltage decreases, which makes the application of specific portableelectronic devices exist many problems. This article studies and analyzes the status of domestic and foreign passiveμDMFC and energy management systems, and determines a reasonable method ofenergy management systems. Analyzed the operation features of passive μDMFC,and tested the dyna mic characteristics of passive at the different response timeunder different loads. Analyzed the performance characteristics of the passive atdifferent temperatures. Due to the low output power of the passive μDMFC,applied ultra low power microcontroller MSP430, combined microprocessors andhigh-efficiency multi-mode output power management module, and adopted thetemperature detection module, and the segment code LCD module. Thus, designedenergy manage ment system with the core MSP430F149processor.Finally, experimental mobile phone tested and verified the feasibility of thesystem, proved the correctness of the design of each module. For a multi-modeoutput, under the state of the mobile phone power shortage we tested in which theoutput is5V, passive micro-DMFC under the coordination of the various modulesto provide a steady and continuous pulse discharge for the phone, to achieve thepurpose of charging mobile phones. The experiment also provided reference and abasis for further research.
