The assembly hollow plate girder bridges are widely adopted in the short spanbridges. The uniqueness of the bridge style is that it divide the superstructure into smallpieces, so that they can be made, transported and assembled easily. The hollow plategirder can be precast in a concentrated field, and then be transported to the constructionsite. The separated girders will be assembled on the spot and the longitudinal joint willalso be casted there. Then all the girders will work as a whole to bear the external load.Either in the urban bridges or in the highway bridges, The assembly hollow plate girderbridges are all played an important role in our country. But in the operation process,relatively numerous diseases of the bridge are always problems too difficult to solve.The most representative one is the damage of the longitudinal joint among all thediseases. Although a lot of manpower and material resources are used to settle theproblem, the effect is very little. So start with the design procedures, the following workabout the assembly hollow plate girder bridge was done in this paper:Analyze the design and checking theory of the hollow plate girder bridge, and seekthe defects in the theory. Preliminary analysis suggests that the precision of currentdesign theory is relatively low because of the limitation of computing power when thetheory was established. A compromise was made for the sake of the engineer can use thetheory easily. So the reckoning about the hollow plate girder is accurate, but the error ofcalculation about the longitudinal joint is too large to ignore.Based on the CAE software ANSYS, the stress distribution of the small and largelongitudinal joint is calculated here. The results suggest that there are not only verticalshear stress in the joint, the transverse normal stresses, longitudinal normal stresses andlongitudinal shear stress are also can not be ignored. They can even larger than thevertical shear stress in the joint. So the combined action of all the stress must beconsidered in the design procedures. The vertical shear stress only checking is notappropriate.The influencing factors of the stress distribution in the longitudinal joint are alsoanalyzed. The thickness of the pavement, the bond strength of the pavement concrete,the bond strength of the joint concrete and the arrangement of steel bars in the joint areall the key factors. And based on the analysis results, some improvement measures aiming at thecurrent joint are put forward in this paper. The cross-link and the whole rigidity of thestructure will be strengthen, so that the stress distribution in the joint will be better. Atlast the effect of the improvement measures is confirmed by a finite element analysis ofthe whole bridge.
