Preservation of cultural relics and historic buildings, together with the sustainabledevelopment of the environment are the subject the whole world is paying attention to.Cultural relics and historic buildings not only are the collective presentation of thenation, it also shows the characteristics of a city and it’s charm. They are also valuablenon-renewable resources. The globalization of modern architecture has made cities loseit’s uniqueness. However, the pursuit of ethnic and regional characters has been aneffect approach to flourish architectural inventions, which drives the continual interestamong architects all over the world. Therefore, there has been some rethinking andconsideration on the preservation and development of cultural relics and historicbuildings.With the development of tourism and the rising of “cultural tourism”, thedevelopment of cultural relics and historic buildings has encountered orthodox. Theintrinsic inadaptability of historic buildings results in the construction of accompanyingbuildings. Architects have to face the problems of how to harmonize the accompanyingbuildings and cultural relics without impacting the values of these historic buildings andthe environment, while reflecting the tunes of current time.Shuangguitang at Liangping in Chongqin is a magnificent temple for Buddhists,which enjoys the good name of “ancestor for northwestern Buddhism”. The historicbuildings in Shuanguitang not only preserve the basics of a Buddhist temple, they alsoboost the characteristics of conventional Sichuan architecture. They are characteristicsof the combination of religion and local cultural. Because of it’s unique historic andcultural values and it’s position in Buddhism, in1983it was announced to be one of theimportant temples for Buddhism in the country by the Department of State. In1991itbecame a preservation place by Sichuan Province. It became a preservation place byChongqin in2000. Currently, Shuanguitang is applying for national preservation place.At the same time, because of the need for cultural development and tourism, PoshanMemorial House and Monk house is planned to be constructed.With the above background, this thesis is based on the construction of PoshanMemorial House and Monk House. In the context of historic building, it discusses theapproaches and methods for architectural innovation, i.e., the concept of combination ofmodern and conventional architecture. It emphasizes the preservation of the conventional values, as well as imparting the modern elements to architecture.The historical environment of the Poshan Memorial House and Monk House willbe analyzed, i.e., it has rich characteristics of Buddhism as well as regional and culturalmarks. Under the guidance of the preservation of historic building and harmony of newbuildings and historic environment, it discusses the integration of modernism andinheriting tradition, from the perspective of site selection, characteristics in space,constructing techniques, and decorating arts. Empirical summary will be presented,which provides reference and proof for similar architectural design.
