Extrusion is a well known manufacturing technology with advantages such as low cost, high efficiency, and other advantages on the produced products such as good dimension accuracy, low tolerance and improvement in mechanical properties. Therefore, extrusion has a quick development nowadays in manufacturing companies and it coming to be one of the most important processes in the metal forming area, especially for the thin-walled shell which mainly using complex extrusion processes. This paper is to improve the competitive ability of the product in the market and promote the practicability of the Computer-Aided Design when many companies are finding the way to shorten the preliminary time of the process planning, In order to deal with the difficulties in extrusion process designing, a intelligent extrusion process design system with CBR/RBR integrated reasoning was designed, following the current developing trend of intelligent process design system.With Systematic and comprehensive analysis on extrusion process design methods of thin-walled shell and development of KBE technology, an intelligent extrusion process design system with CBR/RBR integrated reasoning for thin-walled shell is proposed. This paper will mainly do research on the product model, case retrieving, process reasoning, detail process design, process result exportation, etc.CBR/RBR integrated reasoning is based on unique data structure with standard case, similar cases could be retrieved, using the improved case retrieval algorithm, or the new case could be designed with the support of standard case. The method of CBR/RBR integrated reasoning impenetrated the whole system by all kinds of means, such as joining case parameters and regulation together, technology of knowledge expression.Established an Object-Oriented case model, which is the data structure basis of the CBR/RBR integrated reasoning. Case model have the advantages of both case and rule, including not only case parameters, but also rules within the model.The design theory of extrusion process design for thin-walled shell is studied, and its outline, design flow and difficulties are summarized. 3 standard cases are concluded respectively for small, medium and large size thin-walled shell. The standard cases are important data source for integrated reasoning.According to above the theoretical studies, the intelligent extrusion process design system with CBR/RBR integrated reasoning for thin-walled shell is established on the platform of Visual Studio.net, using the language of C++ and UG Open API. The system will integrate the detail process design in the process design, including structure and dimension design of work piece and die, force and press calculation, the result will come out by means of engineering drawing and process card. With users-friendly interface and abundant knowledge, the system can solve the difficulties of extrusion process design of thin-walled shell.The system as described in this paper have both academic value and engineering value for developing of KBE technology and extrusion process design of thin-walled shell.
