Considering the strong hydrophilicity, special big conjugate structure of the graphene oxide (GO) and the optical properties of rare earth complexes, as well as organic compounds, we have synthesised the composite materials with special optical properties. There are two works we have done.(1) we designed a kind of organic complexes of europium. After covanlently bounded to GO, the new Eu-GO was synthesized.successful coupling has been verified by1H NMR, CHN elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP) for Eu3+contents, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. UV-vis measurements on Eu-GO reveal the characteristic absorption from Eu(Ⅲ) complexes, which gives further proof of the successful coupling. After studied the performance of this functional materials, We found that the material combined the excellent properties of graphene and Eu (Ⅲ) organic complexes, such as good thermal stability, mechanical properties of graphene, unique fluorescent properties of pure Eu (Ⅲ) complexes (especially strong fluorescence emission). Futhermore, it showed a long fluorescent life, higher fluorescence stability and good thermal stability thanks to protection of graphene.(2) Coumarin derivatives (MEC) with good fluorescence properties were modyfied to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a good biocompatibility, biodegradable and nontoxic polymer. This kind of hydrophilic fluorescent polymer has the outrigger hydroxyl. So it can be bounded to the surface of GO and the new MEC-PVA-GO was synthesized. The composite material exhibited superior luminous feature of the coumarin and the improved luminescence properties of graphene oxide, higher quantum yield and enhanced fluorescence lifetime.
