Cold-working die steel is widely used in aerospace, automobile and householdappliance manufacturing industries mainly because of its high strength andwear-resistance, enough toughness and hardenability as well as good machinability. Theforging process is omitted in the use of casting cold-working die steel, the best technicalrequirements are mainly improved by optimizing the alloy compositions and heattreatment processes. Therefore, it can largely reduce the material consumptions andproduction costs. Three materials including1.2382, YBD-4and YBD-3analyzed in thispaper are applied to automobile panel dies, the materials are easily disturbed by work-outfailure problems because of they mainly bear positive pressure and friction in actualapplications. Therefore, we conducted the research on the friction and wear properties of1.2382, YBD-4and YBD-3.In the first part, the wear resistance experiments which under the same speed anddistance are performed on the three materials. Therefore, we can measure the loads atwhich the severe wear happens, analyze the wear mechanisms and the differences inwear resistance between the three materials, and understand the reasons for rapidincrement of wear rate. The results show that the wear rates of the three materials in thelow load range are close to each other, but in the high load range, YBD-3has the bestwear resistance. The main wear mechanisms of three materials in the severe wear pointare oxidation wear and plastic deformation, but the wear appearances are different. Themain reason is that Cr and C elements in the three materials are different. The severewear is mainly resulted from the decrease of surface hardness caused by the hightemperature during sliding wear.In order to study the influence of speed on the friction and wear properties, the wearresistance experiments are performed on YBD-3under three speeds. The results showthat the load of severe wear transition decreases with increasing the speed. At high speed, the plastic deformation of surface material is serious. The difference in wear rate in thethree-speeds experiments is mainly resulted from the diversities of surface temperaturecaused by different speeds.
