Remote Sensing Research And Application Of Tailings Pond

In recent years, Because of the nature and human factors, the tailings pondaccidents occur frequently and it has caused great threaten to us. Therefore, it is ofgreat importance for accident precaution and emergency response to conduct theresearch on tailings pond monitoring based on Remote Sensing and GeographicInformation System. Along with the emergence and broad application of RS and GIS,how to identify tailings pond precisely and extract the tailings pond factors in remotesensing imagery have become an important subject.Using the RS and GIS as its main means and wrestles with prior knowledgeand relevant data of tailings pond, the study proposed basic process of remote sensingof tailings pond. The basic process can be divided into four steps，and it can meet theneeds of monitoring the tailings in a wide range.First, we should build interpretation symbol bank of tailing ponds in differentshape and different scale through the investigation and the reference of many relateddocuments, and it provides evidence to recognize tailings pond.The second step is taking artificial visual interpretation and automatic extractionof seismogram by computer to identify the tailings pond in the researched region andthen correct the measuring results by fieldwork. Then extract the reservoir, damsystem, flood drainage system, exploiting system, catchment area, dam-break flowpaths, cross-border effects, sensitive point at the downstream of the tailings pond withthe technology of RS&GIS geospatial analysis.This study can provide informationfor tailings pond monitoring and management.The last step is building a topic database of tailings pond to manage and classifyour information. In the meantime, the developing of the tailings pond monitoringsystem can display the data and output the results conveniently.By analyzing the tailings pond in Hebei Province, the article got three mainexisting characteristics of tailings there:1) The tailings ponds are in large quantity,small size;2)The tailings ponds are unevenly distributed;3) The sensitive pointsdiversification around them are various.
