Azobenzene has attracted much attention among photo-responsive materials interms of reversibility, speed and simplicity of incorporation. At present, polymer withazobenzene molecule makes great contribution in energy transformation especially fromlight energy to mechanical energy in macroscopic film bending behavior. In addition, italso plays vital role in preparing of Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs). In otherwords, it has laid a solid foundation in functional OFETs such as photo-modulatedOFETs and memory device. This paper mainly focuses on making polymer withazobenzene in side chain and then doing research using the properties of molecularlength and dipole change during the isomerization in film actuators and OFETs.(1) The research of length change of azobenzene in film deformation behaviorThis paper is inspired by the unimorph which is one typical sample of bendingactuators in piezoelectric actuators constituting one piezoelectric plate and one elasticplate. In this way, the piezoelectric transverse strain can be converted to large bendingdisplacement in the perpendicular direction due to constraining of each plate. Unimorphwe making benefits from the transverse strain owing to volume change of polymer withazobenzene inside chain under the irradiation of UV light, thus producing the bendingbehavior. The influence factor of unimorph is also studied as well as the strain generatedby the bending behavior. Additionally, complex and attractive arm-like movements aresuccessfully achieved.(2) The research of dipole change of azobenzene in Organic Field EffectTransistorsThis article also take advantage of conformation reversibly change under the UV light and visible light irradiation or heat, at the same time, the dipole, the length. Herewe first report that using these special features of polymer bearing azobenzene in theside chain into the transistor to realize the light controlled OFETs without changing thegate voltage which means light energy can be transferred into electronic energyindirectly through OFETs. Further, the mechanism of the photo-modulated OFETs isanalyzed.
