Polypropylene (PP) have been widely applied in field of industrial production and daily life due to its excellent performance. However, there are also some deficiencies for PP, such as poor impact resistance and poor flame-retardant. In order to improve the mechanical properties and flame retarcy of PP, varied amount of β-crystal nucleating agents and flame retardants were added into PP, respectively. The twin-screw extruder was used to produce series of flame retardant β-PP samples. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), cone calorimeter (cone), oxygen index (LOI) and other analytical instruments were used in the work to seek proper parameters for generating high content β-crystal polypropylene. Then we study the impact of flame retardant and flame-retardant system on the product of β-crystal polypropylene. The study shows that:(1) The optimization value was the addition of0.4%of quinacridone colorant permanent red E3B, and in high temperature condition (100℃) to isothermal crystallization.(2) The flame retardant of eight bromine ether with low added amount reducedβ-crystallization in β-PP. However, as increase of eight bromine ether amount the reduction of β-crystallization became less. On the contrary, antimony trioxide and red phosphorus in any levels of amount added presemed a strong inhibitory effect on β-crystallization in β-PP.(3) The effect of flame retardant system on β-crystallization in β-PP was related to the amount of eight bromine ether. A low content of addition of flame retardant, antimony trioxide and red phosphorous play a leading role. Meanwhile, at the high amount of flame retardant, the eight bromine ether plays a leading role. It is worth nothing that at low addition level of flame retardant, original inhibition of eight bromine ether,red phosphorus antimony trioxide increased. But at high addition level of flame retardant, the original inhibition ability of eight bromine ether was weakened by antimony trioxide and red phosphorus. And when the mass ratio of the blending of bromine antimony to red phosphorous is2:3, the flame retardant system showed the strongest inhibitory effect on β-crystallization.(4)In the flame retardant blending system, the bromine-antimony system and bromine-antimony-phosphorus system can effectively improve the flame retardant of P-PP, and the flame retardant system of bromine-antimony-phosphorus has a stronger synergism effect than bromine-antimony flame retardant system.The best mass ration of bromine antimony to phosphorous in β-PP is2:3for practical application.
