In the past a few decades, as a new type of conductive materials, conductive polymers have attracted intense interests. Conductive polymers have many advantages compared with ordinary materials, such as low density, easy processing, corrosion-resistant, a tunable conductivity and so on. Therefore, their applications are extensive. In recent years, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)(PEDOT), a derivative of polythiophene, with characteristic of high conductivity, stability at high temperatures, and high transparency, have received much of current interests due to its widely applications in light-emitting diodes, antistatic coatings, organic transistors, plastic electronics, solar cells and sensors. The studies about it focus on controlling its morphology and doping with inorganic particles to improve its performances. Carbon nanotubes attracted much attention due to its super mechanical property, high conductivity and high-thermal conductivity. In the present work, we study the synthesis of PEDODT/CNTs composite and characterize its performances, hoping to deepen understanding of basic knowledge of science and develop new materials.First, synthesis of high-conversion PEDOT was accomplished by oxidative chemical polymerization, using iron sulfate as oxidant and controlling it polymerization temperature. The characterization of obtained polymer indicates that no obvious change occurs in the polymer chains. The conductivity is low due to most of the counterions were removed during the washing procedure.Second, we study the dispersion of the PEDOT in some organic solvents. The result shows that PEDOT has a good dispersibility in methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and dimethylsulfoxide (about lmg/mL after3weeks); has a bad dispersibility in toluene and triethylamine(totally sedimentation after1hour). The reason is the dual function of solubility parameter and dipole. Good solvents for dispersion need similar solubility parameter and dipole. Finally, we successfully synthesize PEDOT/CNTs composite in organic solvent methyl-2-pyrrolidinone using benzoyl peroxide as oxidant. The coating layer is not very uniform. The layer thickness is about20nm by transmission electron microscopy characterization.
