The urban soil pollution is aggravated with the development of urbanization and economy, and its effect on human health has become one of the hot spot problems all over the world. The soilcontamination appeared in Tiexi relocated old industrial area (TROIA) in Shenyang is historicaland serious, and the pollutants are complicated. The object of this paper is to study the spacialdistribution of soil pollution and sources of pollutants according to the condition of TROIA,meanwhile, the health risk assessment of the soil pollution was conducted using the method ofmulti-disciplinary based on the sample collection, laboratory test. Finally, some advice about riskmanagement in Shenyang TROIA has been supplied according to the actual situations. The mainresearch contents are as follows:Firstly,66surface soil samples were collected from TROIA in Shenyang according to theprinciple of typical and uniformity of spacial distribution in type of the enterprise, the use mode ofland and the soil sample. Pollutants were selected as monitoring items, which were harmful tohuman, with a wide range of environmental impact, and listed in the national standards forenvironmental quality control. Copper, mercury, lead, zinc, arsenic, nickel, cadmium, chrome, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs)and polychlorinated biphenyl(PCBs) were analyzed in thelaboratory.Secondly, the principle of statistics and Kriging interpolation method were used to study thespace distribution features of soil pollutants in TROIA.The content of heavy metals was comparedwith soil background value in Liaoning province and the third level standard of nationalenvironmental quality. Copper, lead, arsenic, cadmium and zinc in samples from the originalsmelter, refractory plant and railway materials were higher than the others.∑PAHs in soil samplesfrom the TROIA was from290.9μg/kg to8492.37μg/kg, and the high concentration of PAHs (>5000μg/kg) appeared around northeast pharmaceutical factory, chemical group factory andHongmei gourmet powder factory.∑PCBs in soil samples from the TROIA was from11.98μg/kgto511.81μg/kg, the PCBs (>200μg/kg) showed higher in the transformer factory, chemical groupfactory and cement plant. Thirdly, the investigation of soil pollutant sources in shenyang TROIA were carried out by thefactor analysis. The contents of heavy metals showed correlated with the industrial production andtraffic. PAHs mainly originated from the industrial oil, coal combustion and the leakage ofpetroleum products. And PCBs derive from the leakage occurred in manufacturing process inplastics plant, transformer factory and cement plant. Finally, Risk based corrective action (RBCA) model of the environmental materials andchemical laboratory were used to assess the health risk of shenyang TROIA. The main exposurepaths are determined, and the main substances which caused the non-carcinogenic risk index andcarcinogenic risk were supplied. In a conclusion, the health risks in Shenyang TROIA are inacceptable range.
