Information management is an important way for iron and steel company to improve management level, reduce cost of production and increase competitiveness. The realization of information management on Plate Mill line does not only require ERP system and Process Control System (PCS) but also the MES system which links ERP and PCS system. The development of computer networking technology makes it possible to exchange information among these different levels of control systems. Data exchange is an essential condition to realize fluently among the whole information management system.This paper depends on the MES project for TangShan Plate Mill line. MES system is designed based on the original technology equipments and antomation system, and data exchange technology between MES and PCS is studied, the main works are as follows:(1) The production situation, technology process, equipment layout and the original automation system are surveyed adequately. This work, supplys the basic conditions of technology and equipments for designment of MES system;(2) According to the problems existing on site, demand analysis is completed for MES system. Based on it, the structure and functions of MES system are designed, and the structure and links of MES functional modules are focus on;(3) The technology of data exchange has been studied and the data communication system designed between MES and PCS has been designed. Database intermediate table and ADO technology have been chosed as data exchange programme after comparing and analyzing different data exchange technologies and database accesses;(4) The database intermediate tables are planned and data exchange system is developed for data communication between MES and PCS. The messages of data exchange are divided into downloading type and uploading type, and transmited through different intermediate tables. According to different functions and technology areas, the content of data message, procedures of read and write, and the transmition are designed.This MES system has been applied successfully on the two Plate Mill lines of TangShan plant, the information is exchanged steadily and good application effect has been got. These works can supply reference for MES system designing and realization for similar plants.
