Alkyl alcohol polyoxyethylene ether sulfonate is a kind of anionic-nonionicsurfactant. Compared with the conventional surfactant, it has low critical micelleconcentration and higher surface activity, together with the performance of both theanionic and nonionic surfactant. Therefore, it can be widely used in enhanced oil recovery, especially in oil well of high salt content.Sodium alkyl alcohol polyoxyethylene (4) ether sulfonate (AESO4) was synthesizedby reaction of sodium hydroxide with alkyl alcohol polyoxyethylene (3) ether (AEO3)followed by reaction with2-chloroethanesulfonate. The structures of the products weremeasured by IR and MS. Effect of factors such as reaction temperature, reaction time, mole ratio of the reactants and dosage of solvent et al on yield of the product wasdiscussed. The optimal conditions for the synthesis of AESO4were obtained. In order to synthesize sodium alkyl alcohol polyoxyethylene (3) ether sulfonate(AESO3), sodium alcohol ether sulphate (AES), as the raw material, was sulfonated bysodium sulfite and sodium hydrogen sulfite. Their structure and composition wereobtained by the IR and MS. The result revealed that the final product after purification wasproved to have molecular structures in good agreement with the mixed homologues of C12alkyl alcohol polyoxyethylene (n) ether sulfonates where n is between2to5. A method ofsolvent extraction for extracting and separating AESO3was developed and the extractionprocess was studied. The optimal conditions for extraction of AESO3were obtained. Moreover, the extraction solvent could be reused after regeneration. The AESO3’s surface activities were measured, which had a low cmc,3.8×10-4mol L-1and a low γcmc,31.38mN m-1at25℃. The interfacial tension between thesurfactant solution of AESO3and its complex system and n-octane was measured. It wasfound that the individual surfactant system was unable to reduce the oil-water interfacialtension. By blending with SDBS and PAM, AESO3could reduce the interfacial tension ofoil-water to an order of10-3mN m-1. Moreover, the performances of AESO3wereinvestigated. Result showed that AESO3also had good properties of thermal stability、salttolerance and hard water resistance.
