Printing paste plays an important role in the printing production, it is one of the main factors to determine the product quality, production cost and economic benefit. Since the advent of sodium alginate (SA), it has been very widely used, especially as the main printing paste. With the development of printing technology, sodium alginate has some defects in rotary screen printing and flat screen printing, and also its price has been increasingly rising, in addition to that, its resources are tight that all affect the manufacturers’ production efficiency. So it is necessary to study a new type of printing paste instead. Nowadays, there has been research to use natural starch modified to replace sodium alginate as printing paste, and there are also many domestic manufacturers to replace with synthetic paste mix together, although it has shown some improvement in color, hand feeling is still a big problem.The detailed preparation of modified technology and all kinds of performance testing result of printing paste of carboxymethyl tamarind (CMT) are rarely reported at present, so tamarind kernel polysaccharide (TKP) as the raw material was studied for the preparation of CMT using ethanol as solvent. The degree of substitution (DS) and total extent of etherification were determined by variables such as concentration of ethanol, chloroacetic acid as well as alkalization reaction temperature and time, sodium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and chloroacetic acid molar ratio as well as etherification reaction temperature and time. The optimum conditions for preparing CMT were got through orthogonal experiments. The effectiveness of the treatments was evaluated by means of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray scattering techniques. The results indicated that the degree of substitution of TKP which was modified can reach more than0.5,and by the analysis of infrared spectrum, we know that the molecular structure of TKP was successfully accessed the carboxymethyl groups, and the reaction were not only occurred in the molecular structure of surface.In order to analysis the properties of CMT as printing paste, we selected the TKP and SA to test their physical and chemical aspects of performance respectively and then do the comparison with CMT, including the basic properties of the original paste and printing performance of color paste.After the performance tests of original paste, the three kinds of paste were belong to the pseudo plastic fluid, then after the modification the water solubility and viscosity stability of CMT had a significant improvement. Simultaneously, the printing paste viscosity index and storage stability of CMT were better than the TKP and SA under the similar viscosity, so the CMT should be suitable for the products which have good permeability and uniformity of the printing, and its hold water and dilute resistance were improved significantly after modified.At the same time, with two kinds of disperse dyes that were disperse blue and disperse red, color yield and permeability of three original paste were tested. The results showed that the three kinds of color paste had similar contour sharpness of pattern after printing, but two kinds of disperse dyes of color yield on the CMT were higher than SA and TKP, and uniformity of the printing of CMT was also better than the other two, the test indicated that the color paste can evenly infiltrate fabric, and get the uniform printing effect accessibly when printed pattern.
