A new catalytic system for the oxidation of alcohols with oxygen catalyzed by NHPI (N-hydroxyphthalimide) combined with CuBr has been developed. The reaction results showed that this catalytic system can effectively catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carboxylic acids or ketones.100%selectivity to acetophenone was achieved at94.2%conversion of phenylethanol at75℃for20h. The factors such as reaction temperature, reaction time, solvents, the amount of catalyst were studied. UV-vis was also used to investigate the reaction process, a mechanism for the oxidation of alcohols catalyzed by NHPI/CuBr was proposed.A new catalytic system for the oxidation of alcohols with oxygen catalyzed by NHPI (N-hydroxyphthalimide) combined with HNO3has been developed. This system can effectively catalyze the oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and doesn’t generate excessive carboxylic acids. The optimistic reaction conditions:10mol%NHPI,20mol%HNO3and trace CuBr2for only6h and the selectivities to aldehydes were100%.
