Recently, petroleum coke is still the ma in raw materia ls for the productio n ofcarbon materia ls. our country is lack of o il resources. At present,1/3of oil and oilproducts we use today is imported from other countries. Our country is rich in coalresources. The coal reserves in our country’s is the third of the world, just behind ofUSA and Russia. So using coal instead of petrole um coke to produce carbonmateria ls has a realistic significance.By adjusting the formula, adding admixtures and improv ing the preparatio nprocess, high qua lity a nthracite was adopted as raw materia l to produce high-qualitycarbon materia ls used in Submerged Arc Furnace. the plastic ity is an importantperformance ind icator for electrode paste. In this paper, different content of pitc hand different add itives was used to explore the change of paste plastic ity; In additio n,this paper disc usses the kneading temperature and pitch content on the influence ofthe performa nce of carbon electrode. Finally, the performa nce of home made carbonelectrodes and carbon electrode produced by industry was compared. Furthermore,the techno logy and properties of samples were ana lysed, and related mechanis mswere discussed.The result of experiments shows that the performance of#3made in laboratoryreaches the require ment of YB/T5212-1996standard paste1, and its strengthreaches32MPa, far above the requireme nt of the standard paste1; In addition, thecomprehens ive performance of#8is the best. it reaches the require ment of obfuragepaste2、standard paste1,2,3and che mistry paste.The properties and content o f pitch ha ve influence on the plastic ity of electrodepaste. Electrode paste has the biggest elongation of3.68%with21%pitc h for pitc hA, and3.87%with22%pitch for pitch B. Additives B, C, D used in the experime ntcan obvio usly improve the plasticity of paste. Especia lly with1%additive Delectrode paste elongation reaches5.18%. The actual dosage of additives should bedetermined according to the types of additives. Based on the compressive strength,resistivity and plastic ity of paste, the content of additives should no more than2%. Amoderate amount of additives can improve the electrode paste plasticity, but usingtoo many additives can cause the increasing of resistivity and decreasing ofplastic ity.Different kneading temperature and pitc h content were used to make carbon electrode. It can be concluded that, in certain temperature range, increasing kneadingtemperature can enhance the volume density and strength of carbon electrode.,9samp les with kneading te mperature160-170℃is the best. Its strength is17.4MPa,and its vo lume density is1.55g/cm~3.Different raw materials were used to produce carbon electrode. It found that theresistivity o f C sample us ing graphitized anthracite coal is67.29μΩ·m., significantlylower than A samp le using calc ined coal of83.14μΩ·m. so the graphitized anthracitecan effective ly reduce the resistivity of carbon electrode; But the strength of carbonelectrode us ing graphitized anthracite coal is lower than the strength of carbonelectrode using calc ined coal. The comb ination between graphitized anthracite coaland pitch after roasting is not very well.
