Carbide derived carbon (CDC) is a new kind of composite carbon materials withvarious carbon nanostructures. CDC is produced by selective etching of metal ornon-metal atoms from a carbide crystal lattice by halogens. Due to the diversity andcontrollability of its structure, CDC has high potential value of application in many fields. At present, the domestic and oversea studies of CDC mainly focus on the areas of theelectrochemical energy storage, but the research in the field of tribology is still in primarystage.Through optimizing the process parameters (temperature, atmosphere, time, etc.), thispaper utilized the chloride method to produce the titanium carbide derived carbon(SiC-TiC-CDC) coatings with different structures and properties, via selective etching oftitanium carbide ceramic. The paper explored the structure meritsof SiC-TiC-CDCcoatings via the detection methods of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy(Raman), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope(TEM). The tribology performances were tested on the UMT-3friction and wear testerunder different conditions. As shown in the paper, we can produce the SiC-TiC-CDC coatings with differentstructures and tribology properties. In the condition of low temperature, theself-lubrication layer was mainly composed of TiC-CDC+SiC. In the condition of hightemperature, the self-lubrication layer was mainly composed of TiC-CDC+SiC-CDC+SiC.Corresponding with the rise of temperature, the structures tended to be more ordered. Withthe increase of SiC, CDC in the self-lubrication layer decreased and its structure tended tobe disorder. The tribological properties of the self-lubrication layer were determined bythe content of SiC+CDC. The self-lubrication layer has a lower rate of the frictioncoefficient and wear rate, which were0.104and1.25×10-8m Nm-1) respectively, as SiC toTiC was1to3. The self-lubrication layer can combine with SiC-TiC strongly. CDC candecrease the rate of the friction coefficient, and SiC can increase the wear property.
