Titanium alloy has been widely used in the fields of aeronautics, astronautics,biological medical apparatus and instruments because of its excellent characteristics.But its machining properties are poor. Besides, it is difficult to be processed ascomplex structures using traditional method. EDM is qualified to process Ti alloy.However, the arcing discharge is serious and the machining efficiency is low whenthe traditional power is used. To this respect, research on the power to avoid arcingin Ti alloy EDM is needed.The machining laws of Ti alloy EDM were researched through lots ofexperiments. The problems such as the irregularity of the erosion fragments shapes,the undesirability the erosion fragments throw-out, and too much arcing exist in Tialloy EDM. Aiming at these problems, detecting system and pulse controllingtactics are designed in power supply to avoid arcing in Ti alloy EDM. The pulsepower which can cut short-circuit pulse and produce the pulse, and clear arcing wasdesigned through deep research on the technology of the discharge pulse control.The pulse power concludes the functions of detecting the discharge states. It cansupply relevant control according to the discharge states.The circuits with RC loop to detect the breakdown delay were designed and themethod of gate voltage detection was adopted to complete the design of thedetecting circuits in order to detect every discharge state accurately. The CPLD todetect the discharge states was completed to realize the detection of5kinds ofdischarge states based on the VHDL circuit description language.In order to verify the performance of the designed pulse power, the power isconnected to the general EDM machine for process experiments to optimize theparameters of avoiding arcing pulse control and the results are compared with thatfrom the traditional power, concluding that the performance of pulse power to avoidarcing is better than that of the traditional power.
