The flexible shaft has an important application value and a wide range of use in the realproduction. But the turning of the flexible shaft is a difficult machinery process for the fact that itbends easily under the cutting force because of its large length to diameter ratio. This subjectfocuses on studying the dynamic characteristics and error in the turning of flexible shaft.A simplified finite element model of turning process was established to analysis the effectof cutting parameters on cutting forces and cutting temperature through DEFORM, on the basesof theoretical study. The simulation results indicate that the main cutting force decreases with theincreasing of the cutting speed, and it increases with the increasing of the feed and the backengagement, which coincides with the facts. When the change of the cutting forces was obtained, two kinds of prediction model wereestablished to forecast the machining error, one of which is theoretical model, the other is finitemodel. Both results of the model show that the flexible shaft deforms large in the middle of itand little in the two ends of it under the cutting forces, which shape is like waist drum shape. Thecalculate result of theoretical model is lager than that of the finite model, both of the previousmodel are important in the prediction of the error though they differ from each other.Secondly, the finite model of the flexible shaft cutting was built through the ANSYS todetermine the deflection of the flexible shaft with different length to diameter ratio. Simulationresults demonstrate that the max deformation of the flexible shaft will not be affected by thechange of the diameter or the length, but it will increase exponentially with the increase of thelength to diameter ratio.Thirdly, the turning experiment of flexible shat with different length to diameter ratio wastaken through the numerical control lathe, The results of calculation and experiment were ingood agreement. Then the error prediction model is proved to be actually useful.
