With the development of science and society, people have higherrequirements for products’ performance and appearance, so the product and moldwith free-form surfaces have also been widely used. It has been a major problemin manufacturing industry that how to get free-form surfaces with high precision, because the free-form surfaces always vary irregularly. In order to solve the problem, a type of MRT (MagnetoRheological FluidTorque servo)-based complaint polishing tool system with CNC milling machinewas designed in this thesis. The pressure and the polishing tool’s spatial pose weredivided into two independent control process by controlling the CNC millingmachine’s movement and the MRT’s output torque respectively, and thus, thedecoupling control of force-pose in free-form surfaces polishing was realized. Anda type of polishing tool with mechanical wrist joint structure was designed toadapt to the free-form surfaces. The working stability of the polishing tool was analyzed and its mechanicalstructure was improved. Utilizing the dynamics analysis software ADAMS tobuild the compliant polishing tool system’s virtual prototype and validate itsaction stability through simulation. The elastic contact between the polishing tool and workpieces was analyzedand simulated by means of the finite element software ABAQUS.Study on polishing mechanism of the compliant polishing tool system wascarried out based on the Preston equation, and several key factors in polishingmechanism were analyzed as well. According to the polishing mechanism, a kindof constant pressure polishing strategy was put forward and the average removalof workpiece surfaces was realized theoretically.Based on the models proposed and the polishing tool system developed, polishing experiments were conducted. In the experiments, the MRT’sperformance was tested, the polishing tool’s working stability was validated, andthe average removal of the surfaces was realized.
