Grinding wheels are widely used as tools in grinding machining. Measurementand assessment of the grinding wheel surface topography is usually needed to ensurethe machining quality. There are many topography measurement methods in whichthe vertical scanning white-light interferometer has features of high precision, resolution and a limited measurement range. In order to overcome the problem thatwe can’t have both high resolution and large measurement range, a stitching methodof grinding wheel surface topography based on the overlapping regions is developedin this study. Several topography images were stitched together to get a larger andhigher resolution topography image. It contains more grains and informations whichcan be used for the follow-up parameter analysis and assessment work. In this paper, the single measured data with different reference planes were recovered by thealgorithm, and it was based on the measurement system including vertical scanningwhite-light interferometry and precision three-dimensional control system with arotational motion. The main contents are as follows:(1) Starting from the basic methods of the surface topography measurement, thevertical scanning white-light interferometry was described in details.(2) Several image stitching methods were studied, the features of grinding wheelsurface topography and the sources of measurement error were analysed. Traditionalmodule matching method was improved and the stitching method in this paper wasput forward. Measurement errors e.g. mechanical errors were solved and threeparameters were choosen to do the result evaluation. In the end, the data stitchingresults of different bond, particle sizes and numbers of images were given; the effectand the range of application of this method were discussed. Although this method canget good stitching effect for different experimental subjects, it is more suitable for thegrinding wheels with bigger density or more reflective bond.(3) The structure and parameter setting of precision three-dimensional control system including rotational motion were analysed. A grinding wheel was clampedwith the turntable in order to get images with overlapping regions to do a larger rangemeasurement. The size of the overlapping region was choosen and the relationshipbetween the motion parameters and the size of the overlapping region was studied.
