Cemented carbide is used in daily life by means of its high material quality. For it is ahard and brittle material, we take grinding as the main processing way. But the heat and forcecome into being during grinding will damage the surface of cemented carbide, such assurface/subsurface crack, huge residual stress and bad surface quality, etc). This sort ofprocessing damage will have great effects on the performance and working life. It alsorestricts the application and promotion of this material, so it is necessary to do research onhow to remove material and to find the reason of material damage. We carry out grinding, scratching and frictional wear experiment on cemented carbide to study different grindingparameters influencing on the material removal and damage, different scratch parametersaffecting single abrasive particle cutting cemented carbide and how the different grindingparameters affects material surface’s frictional wear damage. The paper provides theoreticalsupport for processing the cemented carbide high efficiently. The main content of this paper was summarized as follows:First, analyze stress field-function under impression and scratch based on fracturemechanics knowledge. Second, find out the position which is easiest to be damaged throughthree principal stress and iso-stress curves. We run grinding test on three kinds of cemented carbide under different grinding depthand feed speed and observe them through electron microscope. We also analyze grindingforce, residual stress and specific grinding energy to comprehend how the material is removedand damaged on different grinding parameter condition. In order to know the mechanism of material removal and damage under single grain, wedo the scratch experiments under different scratch parameters about the three kinds ofmaterial and observe the change of surface quality, tangential force and friction factor. Theexperiments reveal the influence of different scratch speeds and normal loads on materialremoval and damage.Carry out the frictional wear experiments on the grinded materials, we are able to watchthe change of surface feature, acoustic emission signal and friction factor, to understandregular pattern how the grinding parameter affecting the grinded surface. The paper has a brief summary in the end and put forward a proposal for work plans andresearch area of next step.
