Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) was modified by self-made Styrene/acrylic ester copolymer and optimized modified conditions were defined by embedded ratio. The result indicates that the maximum embedded ratio was99%under the optimized modified conditions, which were as follows:temperature was70℃, pH was9, the quality proportion between PCC and Styrene/acrylic ester copolymer is75:1. The surface structure and performance of modified precipitate calcium carbonate was characterized by DSC, FTIR, Zeta electric potential, particle sizer, sedimentation bulk and contact angle which were compared with unmodified precipitate calcium carbonate. According to DSC and the spectra of FTIR, it was inferred that physical adsorption between surface modifiers and precipitate calcium carbonate had happened. It was found that dispersibility of modified sample was better than unmodified one, sedimentation bulk was huger and Zeta electric potential was higher.Modified precipitated calcium carbonate was used as filler, comparing with the unmodified precipitated calcium carbonate, the distribution of Modified PCC in paper was uniformity and it was difficult to flocculate which were observed by SEM. In order to improve the paper properties of high filler filled papers, optical properties (whiteness and opacity) of handsheets, paper perfect formation (PPF) and physical properties (Z-direction force, tear strength, tensile Index and burst strength) were improved. It is beneficial to the improvement of retention rate, also increase the hydrophobic ability of paper. When adding30%modified PCC, the result indicates that PPF (Paper Perfect Formation) value of papermaking is low. Test measure shows that Z-direction force, bursting strength, tearing strength and tensile index increase10.1%,22.4%,44.3%and9%respectively.
