The thesis focuses on the study of coating formulation which coated on the color ink-jet printing paper, in order to improve the printing performance of paper. The coating is consisted of pigment, adhesive and addition agent. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a water soluble polymer. Due to its good bonding ability, film strength and pigment dispersion ability, it is widely used as adhesives in the paper industry for preparation of coating.Considering that the inkjet ink is often with the negatively charged anions, so it is common that adding cationic fixing agent into coating for the purpose of binding well with negative paper fibers, thereby improving the performance of ink-jet printing paper. However, even with little cationic fixing agent, the viscosity of the coating will be increased greatly. The thesis is planned to use cationic PVA as adhesive and fixing agent instead of cationic fixing agent, to achieve the same printing performance.PVA and etherifying agent are two of the most important raw materials in the thesis. Therefore, at first, select the best raw materials from some most commonly used adhesives and etherifying agents in the preliminary experiment. Two kinds of PVA is reacted with three kinds of etherification agents, respectively. Use the synthesis of cationic PVA as adhesive, which applied to the surface coating of color ink-jet printing paper. Then print with experiment paper and detect the printing performance, through which selecting the best raw materials. The experiment results show that the PVA217and solid etherification agent2,3-epoxy propyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (GTA) are suitable as reaction raw materials.Secondly, PVA was etherified by solid GTA to be cationic and the optimum reaction conditions obtained by orthogonal experimental design were as follow:n (etherification agent):n(PVA)=10:10(gram:gram), reaction time2.5h, reaction pH value9. And test the spectroscopy of product. Prepare the coating, applying cational PVA produced in optimum reaction conditions as, silica as, sodium hexametaphosphate as dispersing agent, and change the ratio of the adhesive agent and the pigment, best of which was selected through the printing performance test.Compare the experiment paper with commercial inkjet paper and base paper, then evaluate that whether the printing performance had been improved or not and its market prospect. The study of the paper shows that the printing performance of experiment paper is much better than that of coated paper with non-cationic PVA. and low-level color paper sold in market. As long as experiment condition permited, the experiment paper is fully capable of catching up with even being better than the high-quality ink-jet paper sold in market. Finally, design four groups of experients. two with PVA and cationic PVA as adhesives, respectively, the other two added fixing agent. The result shows that when adding cationic PVA and fixing agent together, the performance of print is the best of four.
