The aim of this paper is to provide a scientific guide to the design of furniture products, making the design practice possessing a certain product design style, seeking this kind of styleproducts for the classic modeling framework between the components as well as their mainadornment gimmicks and being an adequate foundation for the accurate and rapid product design.European classical dining table is the main research object in this paper, although thefurniture styles of European classical furniture are independent of each other in various historicalperiods, regions or countries, however, because of a wide range of common points and theintrinsic connections between them, especially in historical background, period division, stylename, decorative features, etc, the furniture style also has the mutual influence, shares a commonfoundation of modeling framework, which provides the research basis for this research. On thisbasis, we conducted a scientific selection of representative tables to establish the sample database, then carried out the extraction of the basic model frame and the classification of adornmentgimmick, and drew the following conclusions through research:1. In European classical table, rectangle and circle are the most common shapes, which isassociated with the application function of the table; according to different forms of legssupporting, dining tables were mainly divided into two kinds of forms: edge-support andcenter-support, and the former is the main form.2. According to the statistic analysis of the classic European table’s components, the edgesupport form can be divided by four groups of variables: namely, direct contact and indirectcontact (code A, B), the surface plate and the cover plate (M, N), no-tooth plate and teeth plate(code P, Q), column type, base type and straight leg type (code X, Y, Z); the central support canbe divided by three groups of variables: the base type and the tripod type (code C, D), a waistplate and no waist plate (code G, K), three-legs, four-legs and no-legs (code R, S, T);3. Summarizes some of the main modeling framework of European classical tables, as wellas the modelling and adornment gimmick of the corresponding local components. The structuralframework defines the basic organization form of each component in space relationship, showsthe functional nature of the table, exists as the basis surface of table. And the component’s shapeand decoration are focused on a kind of communication on a level of European culture, exists asthe auxiliary surface. Through the combination and interaction in the design path, ensure thevisual diversity of European classical tables can be based on the same style property in a certainextent; The research significance of this paper is thatnot only ensure the inheritance and unity of thefurniture style, and also can provide a more scientific thinking method for the furniture designpractice, make the design approach of rule-based, avoid the waste of design resources inmanpower and material.
