As the core component of the nuclear pump, impeller need safe,reliable and continuously work for a long time in the extreme conditions ofthe nuclear radiation, high pressure and pressure. In practical applications,the vane root prone to damage, such as cracks, etc, that has a seriousimpact on the life of the impeller, the impeller safe quality and fatiguestrength can be effectively improved if the residual stress distributionoptimize and the concentration reduce. Therefore, it is necessary toresearch the processing of the impeller, and optimize tool path, improvethe surface quality and optimize the distribution the residual stress.The paper discusses the research status and development trends ofnuclear main pump impeller in5-axis CNC machining tool path planning,plan the machining process, analyze the impact of the different tool path toresidual stress, present the double spiral filling curve tool path generationmethod combined with the advantages and the disadvantages of the toolpath. Specific research contents are as follows:First, the impeller modeling theory is introduced that is the B-spline curves, the entire modeling process is stated. The machining technologyrequirements and processing difficulties could be given a analysisaccording to the specific structure of the impeller. In accordance with thedifferent tool path to the residual stress after the impeller machining has aANSYS simulation analysis.The pros and cons of the tool path are described, analyze a varietyconventional tool path, present the double spiral SFCs combined with therelationship of the tool path and residual stress. A numerical simulationanalysis is given to the method, to verify its advantage. Finally, thismethod is applied in the impeller and optimize tool path to improve thedistribution of the residual stress.The nuclear main pump impeller machine in the5-axis CNCmachining center, analyze the surface residual stress distribution, theexperimental verify the theory and simulation results, and provide anexperimental basis to the tool path optimization.Finally, the paper summarizes all the done work and views the studydirection in future.
