With the development of science and manufacturing technology, the demand of finishedwood carving is increasing. The traditional hand-carved have been gradually replaced byautomated engraving system.The engraving machine based on NC system has become the firstchoice of wood engraving in the carving industry. Wood has to be repeated clamping until it isfinished in traditional three-axis NC engraving machine.There are lots of shortcomings,such aspoor accuracy, low efficiency, slow speed.So this paper conducts a research about woodengraving machine based on a five-axis NC system.At first, this paper describes the background and significance of the project, doescomprehensive comparison of wood engraving machine and five-axis NC technology at homeand abroad. Based on the extensive literature, uses the technology of CAD/CAM,VM,CAE andother technologies of modern design and manufacturing to design wood engraving machinebased on five-axis NC, which is mainly used in the three-dimensional wave board and otherstereo processing. This wood engraving machine can complete wood engraving at highquality,such as workpiece with complex surface, cavity workpiece and other diversifiedstereoscopic processing, and has exported to Southeast Asia for now. The main works are asfollows:(1) By compairing the design methods and the process requirements about wood engravingmachine at home and abroad,the main technical parameters and overall layout of the engravingmachine were determined:the gantry mechanical structure with double swing motorized spindlewas used,and the transmission and arrangement of spindle was determined; the welded squarevoid forming sheet was used for frame structure,the beam and bed were innovativelydesigned;through accurate calculations, the design and checking of feed system were finished.(2) The3D mechanical structure of the engraving machine was designed by using Pro/E andthe virtual prototype was built according to virtual assembly simulation. All this work can makeprepare for the static analysis and modal analysis of wood engraving machine.(3) The structural performances of the engraving machine’s key components were analyzedbased on the finite element method. The model pre-treatment, simulating model boundaryconditions, load cases and others were done by using HyperMesh. Combined ANSYS andNastran solvers, the static and modal analysis of the key components were completed. Based onstress and deformation data of gantry beam, bed etc.and processing requirements, the woodengraving machine was optimized and improved.(4) On the premise of the performance and accuracy requirements,combining the design andanalysis data, the five-axis NC wood engraving machine was developed.The wood engraving machine based on five-axis NC can efficiently complete themanufacturing for wood3D curved surface with high-speed and high-precision. The workingprocess only requires clamping workpiece once to complete it with many processes. It can not only streamline the production process, realize the industrialization of the process, improveaccuracy of the wood engraving and enhance the value of wood products,but also can reduce costof wood engraving CNC and improve our technologies in the field.
