In recent years, as a new information carrier, the polarization oflight is commonly concerned. With the emergence of laser and thedevelopment of laser technology, the scope of its application isexpanding, it has developed into a high-tech industry and form a newdetection technology, such as, optical fiber communication, opticalcommunication atmosphere, optical holography, photoelastictechnique, light scattering technology, laser processing technology, optical modulation technology and optical sensing technology, etc. Inorder to further development and application of these technologies,we often need to deal with the problem of polarization. Because of theinfluence of the laser’s own factors, such as high gain, nonlineareffect, cavity mirror diffraction, laser beam does not usually have ahigh coherence, generally for partially coherent light, but it just cansatisfy the practical application. In1994, Daniel F.V.James. for thefirst time pointed out that the degree of polarization of partiallycoherent light will change with light waves propagation in free space, then people in the process of transmission light polarization changesconducted in-depth research, but so far, the study of fractionalFourier transform to the effect of polarization of partially coherentlight is less. Since fractional Fourier transform is introduced into the optical, it has been widely applied in theory and experiment. For thedevelopment of the practical application of fractional Fouriertransform, it will research the influence of the fractional Fouriertransform to polarization, which has a guiding significance for thepolarization characteristics of laser beam in the cavity. This paper firstly introduces the basic theory of partiallycoherent light and simply introduces the basic physical functionwhich describe quantities of partially coherent light, such as crossspectral density function; At the same time the basic theory of Fouriertransform and fractional Fourier transform are reviewed, mainlyincluding the Fourier transform and fractional Fourier transform basicproperties and optical implementation; Secondly this paperintroduces the basic theory of coherent polarization, mainlyintroduces the theory of electromagnetic field tensor of Wolf, presents the definition and expression of cross spectral densitymatrix. This article studies the influence of fractional Fouriertransform to the polarization of partially coherent light, which base onthe basic theory of coherent polarization. With gaussian schell modelbeam as an example, it analyzes the change of the polarization ofGaussian schell model beam through the fractional Fouriertransform. It is concluded the expressions of the polarization, analyzes the factors which affect the degree of polarization andverifies the reliability and correctness of the conclusion using Matlabsoftware to simulate the experiment.
