The Graphics Feature And Value Analysis On Scientific And Technological Illustration Of"Heavenly Creations"

The book,"Heavenly Creations", is known as a milestone in the history of science and technology masterpiece, which has attracted wide interest of domestic and foreign scholars. Many scholars have studied the text of "Heavenly Creations" in a variety of perspectives. The illustrations for science and technology in "Heavenly Creations" have perfectly shown the prevailing socio-production technology, which has important scientific value. However, so far, in terms of the ancient history of science research, the scholars show little attention to the illustrations for science and technology in "Heavenly Creations", and there are rare writings and literature concerning them.In order to better understand the graphics features of the illustration in "Heavenly Creations" and its role in the communication of science and technology in ancient China and value of graphics, this paper gives an in-depth analysis. In addition to the role of "Heavenly Creations" in the development of China Engineering Graphics, the historical background of the illustration for science and technology in "Heavenly Creations", the comparison of the illustration in "Heavenly Creations" with the other illustrations of the related books in the same periods, this paper also gives an in-depth analysis in terms of the field of technology, tools, technology, scenes, technical activities, jobs and the animal, different versions of the drawing style, drawing technical level, environment relations of figures, and summarizes the function of illustration for science and technology in "Heavenly Creations".This paper generalized the content features of the illustrations of technical knowledge focusing on the harmony between man and nature. A collection of illustrative plates has the rational implications, reflects the handicraft techniques of low social class of the people and reflects the characteristics of empirical science. The characteristics of drawing techniques includes the fact that it does not emphasize fine aesthetic design; the technically illustration has the significant characteristics; it has not met the standards of specification drawings; it has no measuring scale but with the moderate proportion. Finally, it generalizes the role and historical value of illustrations for science and technology in "Heavenly Creations" in the development of Chinese illustration graphics.
