Route location is a complicated process which needs to take the investment, operation, social and environment factors in to account comprehensively, therefore, many valuable program have been omitted due to the subjective factors of the designer in manual operation process. To solve all this problems, many domestic and international scholars and experts have put forward many theories and schemes, which have made preliminary achievement already; for instance, if GIS is combined with the American HAO model and GA, we can get a satisfactory scheme in the small range. But it is difficult to solve the highway alignment optimization which is high dimensional and multi-constrained in the large range. For all these reasons, this article has presented an intelligent3D Highway Alignment Optimization method which combines the improved HAO model and RPSO on the basis of the digestion and absorption of variable research results and the summarize of the advantages and existing problems in this field. Based on this method, we built an intelligent3D Highway Alignment Optimization system which is based on ArcGIS. Experimental investigation shows that the application of this system can get the optimal3D line which can meet the set goals and related constraint conditions. It can also meet the terrain changes better, avoid obstacles around logically. In this system we divide the intelligent3D Highway Alignment Optimization into two stages:the corridor finding and the linear optimization. Main research result is as follows:(1)The corridor finding method has been put forward:the HAO model should be improved first and the search for the optimal corridor is based on the improved HAO model and RPSO. The improved HAO model has been built in the Highway Alignment Optimization field, and then we can find out the corridors which are meet the constraint conditions by using RPSO. This provides multiple solutions of the intelligent3D Highway Alignment Optimization.(2)The optimization of the3D highway alignment has been put forward:first we should build the linear optimization model. The decision variables, fitness function and the plan and vertical profile constraints should be determined the same time. And then, by using the powerful spatial analysis ability of ArcGIS and RPSO, we can optimize various parameters of line which is round the set corridor, such we can finish the intelligent3D Highway Alignment Optimization. At last, we can gain the optimal scheme which meets the set conditions. This article developed an intelligent3D Highway (railway) Alignment Optimization system which is based on the ArcGIS. After some tests and the analysis of the results we gained, the followings are concluded:①The scheme from this system has great diversity and it is high efficiency. This research guarantees that the scheme has great diversity by using the improved HAO model and RPSO, which can provide more valuable schemes for the designers. All this avoid the situation that the valuable schemes are omitted by designers.②The system uses the global optimization search method, which can avoid the low efficiency and local optimum. The improved HAO model and RPSO guarantee that the corridor and the linear optimization are not restricted in a limited vertical plane. So we can get a more flexible line, and we can gain the global optimization easier.③The system is suitable for route location in a large range. ArcGIS can support the route location in the large range powerfully since it has the ability to deal with a wide range of topography conveniently. According to the area that the line will pass through, RPSO can improve search efficiency by dividing the large range into several interrelated paragraph, then do the line search separately.
