Groundwater is an important component of water resources, but the original groundwaterenvironment has been changed because of the unscientific and irrational utilization ofgroundwater. It leads to a series of environmental issues, such as land subsidence, swampdewatering, soil salinization, water pollution, saltwater intrusion and so on. In order toguarantee the harmonious and sustainable development of groundwater and social economy, itis obliged to enhance the management and protection of groundwater. MCC Meili PaperIndustry Co., Ltd uses the mixed water from Yellow River and papermaking wastewater toirrigate the forest, which causes groundwater pollution in the study area, an early-warningstudy was carried out in this paper for investigating and assessing the effect of papermakingwastewater irrigation on groundwater environment. The primary conclusions are as follows:(1) Rises of groundwater level and CODMnof groundwater were observed in the studyarea because of papermaking wastewater irrigation. Groundwater level warning criterion wasestablished based on the ultimate exploitation depth and the critical depth, while groundwaterquality criterion was established based on Quality standard for groundwater (GB/T14848-93),and then five early warning levels (blue, green, yellow, orange and red) were determined. Onthe basis of present situation investigation and dynamic forecast, early warning on currentstatus and tend of groundwater level and groundwater quality ware carried out.(2) By comparing the groundwater level under the two different conditions (papermakingwastewater irrigated and non-irrigated), it is clear that groundwater level under wastewaterirrigated condition is much higher than that of non-irrigated condition. Seen from the earlywarning results, most areas belong to the blue zone for the present and the next20years, onlya few areas belong to the red zone. The red zones mainly distribute in the wastewater irrigatedzone and the loess hill-alluvial plain transition zone, which is caused by the small depth togroundwater. The area of red zone decrease over time, which indicates that groundwater levellowers. Over all, groundwater level monitoring should be enhanced to avoid over-exploitation,while at the same time, more attention should be paid to the ditching and drainage engineeringto avoid the small depth, which may lead to soil salinization. (3) By comparing the concentration of CODMnunder the two different conditions(papermaking wastewater irrigated and non-irrigated), it can be seen that CODMnunderwastewater irrigated condition is much higher than that of non-irrigated condition, groundwater quality of surrounding area is also influenced by wastewater. Seen from the earlywarning results, most areas belong to the blue zone currently and for the next20years. Thereis no red area. The warning degree of wastewater irrigated zone is more serious than otherareas. As times goes on, the orange area increases while the green area and blue area decrease,CODMnincreases, and the early warning degree was worsen slowly. So more attention shouldbe paid on the concentration of CODMn, on dynamic monitoring of groundwater quality, andmeasures must be taken to reduce the influence of papermaking wastewater irrigation ongroundwater quality.
