In the highway construction, its cost and budget have been affected directly byearthwork volume which is a crucial index to engineering. Selecting methods ofearthwork calculation refers to calculating efficiency. Furthermore, its accuracy has adirect impact on controlling project cost and organising construction. It is well knownthat sectional method, grid method, contouring method and DTM are traditionalapproaches for calculating earthwork volume. As a matter of fact, there are other newways derived from four basic ones. The article detailedly introduce, contrast andanalyze four traditional techniques of calculating earthwork volume based on basictheory、procedure and precision analyse.With the related research and application of digital earth attracted attention allover the world, there is a fast development in digital elevation model which is one ofsignificant supporting technologies for digital earth in recent years. DEM is widelyapplied in every field, including mapping、remote sense、city planning、GIS and so forth.With the vigorous development of GIS, the application of DEM is doomed to one oftasks mainly studied by mapping and GIS. DEM’s theories and methods are primarilyintroduced in ChapterIII which includes DEM’s characteristics, classification,expression, data acquisition and means of construction.Since DEM tends to be widely applied in calculation of earthwork in recent years,how to apply DEM to calculating earthwork becomes a studied key point in the article.ChapterIV and ChapterV are the core in the article. There are two central means ofbuilding models for DEM discussed in ChapterIV. One is based on regular grid, and theother one is based on Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN). ChapterIV focuses onstudying the optimized method of DEM based on TIN. The author utilizes VB to carryout the calculation of earthwork volume based on above two methods. ChapterV is aapplication part. Xiajiang Road, as a section of Huang juewan interchange project, istaken for example in the ChapterV. Some sections’ earthwork in this road is accuratedlycalculated by DEM which is set up by using AutoCAD Civil3D2012software. Itseffeciency and precision are superior to traditional ways. Civil3D software alsoachieves the real-time management for earthwork construction.
