The polarization properties of beams propagating in atmospheric environmentwill change by turbulence, aerosols and other factors, even in free spacetransmission, it will also change due to the coherence induction effect. Study thevariation of polarization propagating properties is the premise of carrying outpolarization information technology in the field of remote sensing, target detection,and optical communication applications, therefore, the study has important researchsignificance. This paper was based on the unified theory of polarization andcoherence of stochastic electromagnetic beams, studied the variation ofpolarization characteristics of the beams with different parameters and propagatingin free space and different turbulence intensity.The main contents of this paper are included as below:(1) The paper studied the unified theory of polarization and coherence andanalysed the way of how to study the polarization properties by the cross-spectraldensity matrix. Derived the cross-spectral density matrix analytical expressions ofGauss-Schell model beam.(2) In order to solve the problem of beams propagating in free space. Thepaper studied the evolution of polarization matrix of beams propagating in freespace. Analysed the variation of polarization characteristics with different beamsparameters and obtained the polarization degree of the beams will be transmitted inthe steady state after short diantance.(3) In order to solve the problem of beam propagation in atmosphericturbulence. The paper studied the evolution of polarization matrix of beamspropagating in atmosphere turbulence. Analysed the variation of polarizationcharacteristics with different turbulence intensity and beams parameters. Obtainedthe polarization degree of the beams would gradually decreased from steady state,and not return to the initial value of beams.
