For the past few years, the method of slope vegetation has been widely used in slope regulation planning, since it with dual advantages of slope greening and slope strengthening. The most important parts of plant is root, which is the most crucial organ to plants’growing development and metabolism. There are many advantages of the roots, such as water conserving, rehabilitating desertified cultivated land, preventing loss of water and soil, wind break and sand fixation. Therefore, the research of root morphology is highly significant in terms of the observation plants’daily growth and the research of solid slope mechanism.Accurate measuring the essential parameters is the premise and the key to root morphology analysis, which as a starting point, the photos of root morphology during the growing process of arbor dahurian larch will be obtained via endoscopic technique. And correlation process of root image information are done. The process contains image preprocessing, edge detection, and computing root morphology parameter values as root length, root diameter accroding to the processed image.First of all, the collected root image have been processed using digital image processing. The process mainly contains grayscale transformation, enhancing contrast, histogram equalization and image denoising.In the second place, the methods of edge detection have been focused in this dissertation. and the idea of using genetic BP neural network in edge detection of root image is presented. This dissertation has innovated three characteristics vectors for describing the edge and which are used as input signal of a three-layers feed-forward neural network. Compared to traditional edge detection algorithms, this algorithm have the traits of noise robust and accurate in genuine edge positioning. The contour extracted by this method is closer to the practical contour, therefore it is more beneficial to the monitoring of root morphology. High-precision positioning information has lay a good foundation for the subsequent research of root solid slope.Thirdly, the roots image has been processed by morphology pre-processing after the edge detection, which has the effect of making the roots edge more smooth and continuous. Then the image has been image thinning in order to extract the skeleton and fill the skeleton image. And the length, the superficial area, the average diameter of the main root and the the superficial area of total roots have been computed through Matlab image manipulation tool.Finally, solid slope mechanism of plants’root has been analysed. The result shows that solid slope have different effects according to different soil environmental conditions. This paper has given the mechanical model of interaction force between plants’roots and soil. And explained the function&role the plants’roots played in improving slope stability.
