The study in this thesis is a technology application research which is funded by many projects, such as Yellow River Institute of Hydraulic Research’s technology development project "Research and Development of the Automatic Monitoring System of the Yellow River Ice Conditions.For ages, the world-famous Yellow River has frequently suffered from a series of natural disasters, especially the flooding with the biggest threat to the security of people, which happened in summer, and happened in winter called ice run. In a lot of rivers in north China, due to the special geographical factors in the northern region and its cold weather in winter, combined with the deposition in the rivers, ice run occurs frequently, especially in the Yellow River shelter-forest region, and it can draw that effective measures must be taken for its prevention and treatment.Although National Ministry of Water Resources has announced the industry standard of the People’s Republic of China about the specification of river ice observation (SL59-93) on January1,1994, it is still difficult to make the real-time ice detection in the Yellow River owing to its special geographical environment. In order to be able to detect ice of the Yellow River, to predict the ice disaster, and to improve the backward situation in ice detection of the Yellow River, this thesis applies the GPRS mobile communication technology to the acquiring the images of the real-time ice detection in the ice run season of Yellow River. By using the technology of MCU, MMS protocol, GPRS wireless communication module, image capture and image compression coding module, and the controlling of the image capture and compression processing of the serial port, the image is sent to management personnel in the form of MMS through the mobile phone in order to realize the remote site monitoring of the ice thickness and the situation of ice run, and to provide a reference for ice decision-making departments. It has far-reaching significance on the people’s normal life, the national economic and social sustainable development.To achieve the above monitoring technology, this thesis will make an experiment study from the following four aspects.1. By consulting a large number of related literatures at home and abroad, it can be concluded that there are lots of methods of the ice monitoring. According to the summarizing the existing technologies, this thesis adopts the technology which is based on the differences of physical characteristic of air, ice and water, so as to realize the measurement of ice thickness, ice water level and so on. Moreover, this thesis adds the image monitoring and temperature sensing monitoring module to the original system, so that the river ice monitoring is more three-dimensional.2. In this thesis, the author makes a theoretical research on the two key technologies of monitoring system, which are the GPRS network technology and multimedia message transmission technology. By getting the knowledge of GPRS network technology, including its notion, characteristics, the network composition, working principle and its application in various industries; the knowledge of multimedia message transmission technology, including the notion of MMS transmission, WAP technology principle and implementation approach; the difference between the SMS and EMS and so on, a feasibility plan of MMS image monitoring is carried out.3. MMS image transmission experiment is conducted based on the GPRS module (PTC01) of the company in Guang Zhou.4. To ensure the long-term stable operation of monitoring system, a solar power supply system is designed according to the condition of the Yellow River water dam in Wang Jiazhai, and the skill of installation of the monitoring ice system is improved.Based on MMS image transmission technology of the Yellow River ice monitoring system, a monitoring test has been conducted over a period of months from November2011to March2012in water conservancy hub of Wan Jiazhai. During the period of monitoring, the system is working well. It can not only get the information of the ice thickness, ice water levels and other hydrological information through the system, but also can keep track of the image information. This study realizes the three-dimensional monitoring of the Yellow River, but in the period of monitoring, there is still some deficiencies in the operation of the whole monitoring system, which need to be improved in the future study.
