In recent years， due to the rapid economic and tourism development， people paymore attention to leisure traveling. Therefore， traveling has become the first choice forholidays. Thailand is one of the most famous tourist countries in the world in where tourismindustry started quite early and， by far， tourism industry plays a vital role in Thailand’seconomic growth. With the remarkable geographic location and tourist attractions， namelytemples， the magnificent royal palace， soft sand beaches， undulating mountains， aswell as rich natural resources and friendly people， Thailand lures a large amount of peoplearound the world to visit.Phuket， the biggest island located on the west coast of the south and is900kilometersfar from the capital city Bangkok， is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand.Phuket is well-known as “The Pearl of Andaman” where the travelers from Southeast Asiaand around the world choose to go on holidays. Every year， Phuket welcomes more than5millions visitors making more than one trillion baht money so that Phuket becomes themainstay of Thailand’s tourism industry. In the future， the world tourism industry tends toappear as a unity in which tourism market will be borderless. Also， The ASEAN communityis expected to establish in2015. As the cooperation in any aspect between the countries inASEAN community is gradually strengthened， the tourism cooperation will also givePhuket both challenge and chances.The aim of this study is to investigate the famous coastal island of Thailand–Phuket.With the application of SWOT approach， the study explores and gives the overview aboutPhuket’s tourism and its development. Furthermore， this research discusses about tourismproblems in Phuket and proposes some ideas that may be useful solution.
