Kim Jong II has made a series of economic reforms in searching aeconomy developing path that is suitable for North Korea after takingpower. Although the steps are small, the economic reforms initiated byKim Jong II have great influence. The economic reforms in North Koreahave profound influences on the direction of North Korea, the peace andstability of Korea Peninsula, as well as the economic cooperation andintegration of Northeast Asia. The passing away of Kim Jong II at the endof2011declared the start of post-Kim Jong II era of North Korea. So it isessential to comb and analyze the economic reforms that Kim Jong IIpracticed gradually during his17years in power, which is illuminatingfor a comprehensive and objective attitude towards North Korea and itsfuture developing path.Based on the above though, this thesis is named as “an analysis ofthe North Korea economic reforms in Kim Jong II era”. This thesis makesa comprehensive and systematic coming and analysis of the economicreforms in Kim Jong II era with the time range from1994when he tookpower to2011when he passed away, and with the measures of economicreforms as main threads. The thesis is aimed to making people see thechanges and advances of North Korea in economic reforms in abouttwenty years and have a better understanding of the complexity andessentiality of North Korea economic reforms. The research on North Korea economic reforms consists of fourparts:The first part starts from a brief introduction of the main ideology inNorth Korea of Kim Jong II era to explain the condition of the politicaland economic structure in Kim Jong II era. The research tries to concludethe propelling factors of Kim Jong II’s practice of economic reforms from four aspects: the political and economic situation of North Korea at thebeginning of his taking power, the new economic explorations in his olderyears, the examples and induction from the outside, and the personaltraits of Kim Jong II era so as to construct a background of economicreforms during Kim Jong II era.The second part combs the main content of economic reforms duringKim Jong II era and concludes several features of the economic reforms.Compared with North Korea in Kim Il-sung era, Kim Jong II has madevarious changes and reforms in idea and theory, agriculture mechanism, exploration on market economy, foreign trade and currency reform, etc.On the basis of a detailed elaboration on the content of economic reforms, the research makes corresponding conclusion on economic reformsduring Kim Jong II era and points its insufficiency in mind opening. Innature, the reforms are gradual reforms without the changing of the oldeconomy structure; in methods, the reforms are reforms outside thesystem and cut the bold reforms off the main body in geography; thereforms are tinted with ideology and movement-typed economy andappear certain unsteadiness; compared with the former period, thereforms reflect the pragmatic ideas of North Korea leaders. The third part makes corresponding comments of the economicreforms during Kim Jong II era based on the previous discussion. Thereare still horizontal gaps but there are vertical advances. Various problemsstill exist in reforms, and they should be furthered determinedly. Althoughthe steps of Kim Jong II economic reforms, they will have great influenceon the stability and future direction of North Korea, the peace andstability of Korea Peninsula, the unification of the North and the South, aswell as the economic cooperation and integration of Northeast Asia.Part four makes a prospect of the deepening of economic reforms inNorth Korea from the certainty and possibility. No matter to follow the trend of economy globalization and maintain the legitimacy of regime orfrom the angle of the prosperity of many socialist countries after reforms,North Korea should deepen its reform. Certainly, North Korea has manyadvantages in position, resources, national quality, internationalexpectations, but it still faces such predicaments as bounding ideas, lagging political structure reform, deteriorating surrounding environment. However, there is no way back, North Korea has the necessity and theroom of furthering its economic reforms.
