The bank’s principal activities include liability business, asset business and intermediary business. Asset business and intermediary business generate revenues. Banking income level reflects the vitality of commercial banks and is one of the main signs of market acceptance. The types of business and revenue structure have an important impact on the income level of the commercial banks. Given the developments of economical globalization and the reform deepening of the financial system, traditional deposit and loan business take spread incomes as the main source of profits for commercial banks, whose profit margins have been gradually compressed. However, the non-interest income contribution of intermediate business is rising. In recent years, the intermediate business of commercial banks in China have made great progresses, but the tradition of the assets business still play a key role in the commercial banks’non-interest incomes. The proportion of earnings from intermediate business is still small. In such a context, it is necessary to study the relationship between China’s commercial banking business types, income structure and operating performance. And so is to explore an effective way to improve the operating performance of the banks.At first, this article reviews the major types of business and the performance evaluation of Chinese commercial banks. Composition analysis of revenue of16Chinese listed commercial banks from2007to2011show that the income level of intermediary business in China has been greatly improved. But the income share is still low related to traditional credit business. Using the EVA index of listed commercial banks in China from2007to2011, the performance conditions and, revenues and operating performances of listed commercial banking business relationship are compared. The study analyzes the existing problems in the development of China’s commercial banking business, and recommends some ways to accelerate the development of intermediary business, to optimize business structure and to increase business innovation so as to improve the operating performance of the commercial banks in China.
