In recent years, Wugong county has made an effort to better protect land and prevent thetown over-development. So, the paper monitored the land-use change of the study region withthe TM remote sensing images of24th July,2008and30th June,2009, which not only pro-vided the basis for general planning and rational utilization of the land resource in the future, but also the land area for formulating the region planning. The two TM remote sensing images were used in treating about image clipping and im-age enhancement in order to get the TM remote sensing images of the highest visual interpre-tation, which were studied with the maximum likelihood method and SVM of supervisedclassification. By comparing Kappa of the land use charts, the paper found that the classifica-tion precision of SVM is better than the maximum likelihood method. Because the two TMremote sensing images had lots of serious phenomenon of "same object with different spectra",so, under the same condition of ROI, SVM took about30minutes, but the maximum likelih-ood method took only about one minute. The land use of Wugong county was studied, which the county’s most important land usetypes are cultivated land, vegetable land and construction land of three kinds. Types of landuse changed significantly in Wugong in three years. The construction land, orchards and trafficland were increasing year by year, but the cultivated land, vegetable land, special land andwaters were a decreasing trend. Among them, the rate of decrease of the cultivated land was20.34%, but it was still the county ’s largest land use types which can’t be replaced by anyother kind of land use type; The annual gradient of the construction land was the largest whichwas up to76.51%, mainly transformed from farmland and vegetable land, indicating furtherincrease of the urbanization process in Wugong; The orchards increased by2938.80mu from2006to2009, mainly changed from cultivated land and vegetable land, at an annual growthrate of20.45%; The traffic land was the least land use type in Wugong, but its area changepercentage was in second place, reaching156.19%, which promoted the economic develop-ment of Wugong; The vegetable land decreased at a rate of8.32%in three years whichchanged into a big amount of the cultivated land, construction land and a small amount of theorchards; The special land decreased2555.43mu from2006to2009, of which846.41muchanged into the construction land, the total transfer amount of31.57%; Except cultivatedland, an annual chang rate of waters was the least, only3.60%, but Wugong still need to en- hance the protection of the river basin.Wugong’s land use/land cover change was mainly affected by topography, soil, economicand policy. Especially, under the effect of economic and policy-driven factors, the land usewas been becoming more and more complex. Wugong carried out the policies on family plan-ning, protection of cultivated land, development of modern agriculture and so on in order toreduce the land carrying capacity. Nevertheless, the county paid close attention to the weaklinks and established firmly the concept of "the powerful industrial county", which promotedgreatly the development of the second industry so that it obtained from the economic benefitsfar greater than the first, the tertiary industry. But it led to the county’s land excess load, soilfertility decline, etc, which will have great influence on Wugong’s development in the future. Therefore, the county must control to some extent the process of urbanization and protect thefarmland, and so on.
