As peer to peer (P2P) applications are widely applied, the demand for P2P application model is also growing. Compared to traditional Client/Server (C/S) model, P2P is off-center, scalability, high performance-price ratio, strong robustness, load balancing and so on. Thus, more and more organizations and persons are applying P2P technology into Internet field such as Instant Messaging, files sharing, IP Phone, streaming etc. Meanwhile, a large number of new P2P system structures and related algorithms are emerging, its feasibility, accuracy is required to tested and verified, but as for the P2P network of such complex environment, large-scale topology of the system in general to be verified by simulation. P2P network simulation is based on P2P network model and used software program to imitate the process of system operation and access to the research data of the process, under the premise of saving development time and expenses it can obtain a lot of research data in order to fully assess the P2P network.This paper mainly concludes the work theory and development of P2P technique, analyzes category, network topology, routing-algorithm of P2P network and other associations and introduces the design and implementation of a P2P network application simulation system, highlights the system architecture and implementation details of the simulation platform. The platform can provide the true and universal simulation environment for all kinds of P2P network protocol and modularize some common features of P2P system in order to facilitate its use. At the same time, the paper introduces the simulation of three P2P applications of BitTorrent, Peercast and Skype, takes the reach and application of five technologies, such as the NS event-driven mechanism of real-time scheduling, the UDP agent technology of many-to-many, parallel distributed NS simulation, simulation of access mechanism based on converter, Skype protocol analysis based on black-box approach, as well as respectively achieved the simulation of a file transfer application, a streaming media application and a instant messaging application.The paper can facilitate P2P researchers and P2P simulator devisers, also can provide instructional suggestions for P2P network optimization, reproduction of P2P network environment, Internet management and governance.
