Virtual Reality (VR) which is created in the process of exploring nature is a scientific method and a technique for learning about nature, simulating nature and making use of nature. With the development of software and hardware technology, three dimensional shape designing in virtual reality environment has become one of hot spots in academia and industry. Designers can make the creation of3d shapes of the products directly using digital pen without caring about the mathematical expression of3d curve through virtual reality technology.Traditional keyboard mouse control mode cannot meet the requirements of users for the needs of high efficiency and high naturality in virtual reality of3d sketch designing environment, and the interaction based on3d pen ges-ture can realize the transition smoothly between people’s cognitive space and computer’s calculation space and improve the bottleneck in human-computer interaction design environment because of its characteristics such as three di-mensionality, continuity, the inaccuracy and implicity and so on. Based on that of point, this paper researched the3d pen gesture recognition algorithm which is the core technology of three dimensional pen gesture interaction.The main contribution of this paper are as follows:1) A3d pen gesture recognition method based on multicategory support vector machine has been proposed. We give a simple and intuitive feature defi-nition of pen gesture considering the sequential and geometrical characteristics of3d pen gesture and come up with a method of3d pen gesture recognition based on multicategory SVM considering the fact of ambiguous classifying area of original SVM.2) A3d pen gesture recognition method based on Hidden Markov Model has been proposed. Considering the sequential character of HMM, we convert the problem of3d pen gesture recognition to2d pen gesture recognition using rectangular projection, and combined multiple Hidden Markov Model to stand for one gesture, then doing the gesture recognition.3) A3d sketch rendering prototype system based on stereo vision has been completed and a set of simple and diversiform3d pen gesture library has been defined. The prototype system experiments show that both of the two kinds of3d pen gesture recognition methods can achieve the3d pen gesture recognition in virtual reality environment.
