The Research On Biography Of Falin

Falin was a famous buddhist for protection of buddhism. The book, Biography of Faiin(唐护法沙门法琳别传),was writed by the buddhist YanCong, who contributed a lot to the protection of Buddhism in early Tang dynasty. The book records the whole life of Failin in length, including his undaunted words regardless of imperial power and the scolding from nobles. Through paragraph division, punctuation, and emendation, the paper aims to restore the original version of Biography of Falin collected in Da Zheng Xin Xiu Da Zang Jing, as much as possible. On this basis, by ascertaining Chinese Dictionary and Language Dictionary of Tang and Five Dynasties, the paper also makes deep research on the language style and lexical issues of the book in early Tang Dynasty. The paper provides instruction to update and revise the relevant books and materials about hysteresis, meaning missing, as well as punctuation and proof reading.This dissertation consists of three departments:The first part, a general introduction to Biography of Falin.This section is the corner-stone of the Language Studies about Biography of Falin containing the summary of data analysis and integration, the background of controversies about buddhism and Taoism in the early Tang Dynasty, the life of YanCong and Falin and their literary works, as well as the value of the book Biography of Falin and the different version in circulation, especially the DunHuang version.The second part, the essential annotation of Biography of Falin.This section is the key part of the paper. By comparing the vision of Biography of Falin in Da Zheng Xin Xiu Da Zang Jing, with the version of Dunhuang, the paper tries to restore the original appearance of the book. Through paragraph division, punctuation, and emendation, sentences of the book become smooth and also enables modern people to read.The third part, a research about Biography of Falin’s glossary. Vocabulary study is carried out on the basis of collating. Firstly, collate and analyze the documentary evidence of the inappropriate punctuation in Biography of Falin, the version in Da Zheng Xin Xiu Da Zang Jing. Then, introduce and emendate the versions in Taisho Tripitaka, China Tibet, and Dunhuang.The research about glossary of Biography of Falin,focuses on the supplementary sub new words and meanings of Chinese Dictionary and Language Dictionary of Tang and Five Dynasties, ahead of some of the words of the documentary evidence era. The significance and value of supplementary drain missing in this book is worth to research.
