To significantly enhance the capacity in a pragmatic and cost-effective way, the heterogeneous deployment has been defined in the LTE-Advanced standard, where the system gains are only achievable through deployment of low-power nodes. In heterogeneous network, self-organizing network (SON) technology, which is conceived to minimize human intervention in engineering processes, are booming to meet the fast-increasing requirements of wireless services and alleviate the pressure on operator’s business case. In this article, we investigate the self-configured radio resource algorithms in the heterogeneous network from the following three aspects.First is the self-configured radio resource algorithm in three-dimensional femtocell systems. In this paper, by predicting the mutual interferences in both newly-built cell and existing neighbor cells, PRB chosen order with corresponding transmission power will be obtained which avoids the inter-cell interference as much as possible and ensures the coexistence of femtocells.Second is the self-configured radio resource algorithm in relay-based cellular systems. This paper investigates resource configuration from two aspects. One focuses on the resource allocation between macrocell and relay cells, which ensures the serving fairness among users across the whole network. The other aims to balance the achieving capacity between backhaul link and access link, utilizing the resources in the most cost efficient way. Through formulating these two principles, closed-form solution can be calculated, which assists in resource configuration process.Third is throughput-optimized resource configuration algorithm in cellular relay networks. To achieve a better performance of system throughput, bandwidth allocation and power consumption are regarded as variables to be jointly optimized, which are under constraints of total bandwidth, transmission power and balanced capacity between backhaul link and access link. However, this optimization problem involves transcendental functions and it’s difficult to obtain the closed-form solution. Therefore, this paper investigates a resource configuration algorithm, which provides an optimizing strategy to approach a higher system throughput. In different scenarios, this paper investigates the self-configured radio resource algorithms combined with simulation results, which proves the corresponding reliability and validity. Finally, conclusion is made and some possible research directions are pointed out.
