With the development of information technology on structure optimization, traditional optimization design method has gradually replaced new swarm intelligent algorithm. In traditional optimization design method, the optimization objective function is too simple to correspond with the design problems in actual engineering.Swarm intelligent algorithm provides a basis for finding solutions of complex problems because of grouping advantages. This paper study on bacteria foraging algorithm and apply to structural optimal design. Bacteria foraging algorithm is a random optimization algorithm which can search globally and the concept doesn’t need to adjust many parameters.This paper introduces structure optimization design and the development process of design optimization algorithm briefly, elaborates research status in domestic and abroad, basic theory of bacteria foraging algorithm, and processes of bacteria foraging algorithm, then applies the algorithm to structure optimization design for the first time.The study shows it has a faster convergence speed at beginning when solving structure optimization problem than later stage, but with all particles close to optimal solution of the space gradually, the speed slow down. Against to this, this paper combines bacteria foraging algorithm itering step with processing independent variable boundary by "harmony search" optimization algorithm, looking forward to search particles in global and local area.On the basis of bacteria foraging algorithm, this paper focuses on solving frame and truss structure optimization problem by bacteria foraging algorithm, and improving bacteria foraging algorithm. The improved method is applied to solve structure optimization problem on the basis of examples, which enriched researching theory and verified improved bacteria foraging algorithm in structure optimization problem in practicability and effectiveness.
