The safety transportation security technology of vessels is always the shipping industry’s Research Emphases during the voyage. From1998to2005, large-size and extra-heavy cargo damage happened five times, immediately triggering widespread concerns over the issue on its transportation safety. That shipping transportation couldn’t be fully ensured simply by theoretical calculations when the accidents inevitably happened with various check and security operation being done and all the codes and standards being fulfilled before sailing. Therefore it was raised to monitor the state of securing and lashing units and ship’s structure in real-time. When vessels applied the structure monitoring technology and was in dangerous situations (i.e. in exceeding the pre-set alarm value at a particular position) during voyage, the system would automatically alert so that the crew took counter-measures corresponding to the specific situation in time. Meanwhile, the voyage data would be collected and restored by the monitoring system. Subsequently the analysis and comparison on these data would be carried out to collect the experience for developing the later securing and lashing plan and tackling the similarly dangerous case. In addition, based on the result of the data analysis, the concerned crew determined how to step up security measures to further improve the transportation safety of large-size and extra-heavy cargos. But there were few containers, bulk carriers and oil tankers fitted with the structure monitoring system and few researches on the large-sized and extra-heavy cargos transportation. In an effort to further improve the safety of the large-sized and extra-heavy cargoes transportation, this thesis discussed whether it is necessary and feasible for the structure monitoring technology applied to marine transportation of large-sized and extra-heavy cargoes and analyzed how to determine and use the monitoring sensors. The specific research content set out as following:(1) Summed up the principal of the structure monitoring technology and its research development and introduced its application in other fields. This thesis studied the Extra-large Size Jacket, analyzed the structure characteristics and damage-prone areas of the barge referring to the codes and discussed the methods to transfer and secure Jacket and the requests on stability and strength of the barge. Ultimately the necessity and feasibility to monitor could be reached.(2) Analyzed the selection of the more suitable sensors used by the structure monitoring technology and briefly depicted where and how to fix the sensors.(3) Determined the specific positions to monitor the barge according to the results of finite analysis on the transferring of Extra-large Size Jacket and the related codes and put forward the idea to develop the sub-module of the structure system, known as the local strength monitoring system for barges, based on the above-mentioned positions and the arranged sensors.
