English political news is an essential channel for us to be informed of the latest political events in English speaking countries and also plays an important role in the process of China’s foreign policies making. Owing to the barrier between English and Chinese, news translation contributes a lot to the conveyance of information and the quality of the translation affects the mutual communication. Chinese version of English political news has both characteristics of political news and translation, which crosses the barriers of language and culture. It is universal for all the media in the world to process the international news materials including English political news, which includes translating and editing the news. The processing of the international news materials is named as news adaption(新闻编译).News translator’s multi-roles under the identity of translator, including the role of translator at linguistic level and other social roles such as editor and journalist, have mutual impacts on translator’s behaviours in political news adaption. Affected by the linguistic and social roles, news translators always adopt some proper translation strategies to achieve the expected communicative effects, and translation variation is one of the common used strategies in news adaption. However, editing translation method (编译法) is included in Huang Zhonglian’s Translation Variation Theory. Editing translation method seems to be logically contradictive with adaptive translation and this paper tries to analyze the distinction and connection between adaptive translation in news adaption and editing translation method in Huang’s Translation Variation. As a variant of news translation, news adaption is an outcome of translator’s behaviours manipulated by various factors. Andre Lefevere pointed out that there are mainly three social and cultural factors that manipulate translation:ideology, dominant poetics and patronage. The three factors can be divided into factors at linguistic level and factors at social level. This paper makes analysis on the manipulating factors which affect news translators. This paper also analyzes translator’s multi-roles and how the roles affect political news adaption."Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation, which was proposed by Professor Zhou Lingshun, is used in this paper to evaluate the translator’s roles in the political news adaption. In the continuum model, translators tend to be loyal to the original news materials under the role of translator at linguistic level and cater to social requirements under social roles. Through the above analyses, this paper concludes that political news adaption is an outcome done by translators manipulated by various factors and behaviors in political news adaption result from the interaction of linguistic role and social roles. The socialization of political news adaption is a process of translator’s roles shifting from the linguistic role to social roles. Meanwhile the political news adaption also shifts from "pure linguistic translation" to "socialized translation".This paper is divided into six chapters: Chapter one is an introduction to the research background, significance of the study and structure of the paper.Chapter Two is Literature Review. This chapter introduces the previous studies on news adaption and news translator. In Chapter Three, Manipulation Theory, Translation Variation Theory and the "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation are introduced.Chapter Four focuses on the related studies on the text of news adaption. This chapter compares the distinction and connection between adaptive translation in news adaption and editing translation method in Huang’s Translation Variation. This chapter analyses some example news adaption manipulated by linguistic and social factors.Chapter Five focuses on the news translator’s roles in political news adaption. Moreover, this chapter analyses how manipulating factors manipulate news translators in political news adaption. News translator’s behaviours of "Truth-seeking" and "Utility-attaining" are also analysed in this chapter. Example texts of political news adaption are evaluated with the "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation. The last chapter is the conclusion part. Based on the above researches, this paper concludes that political news adaption is an outcome done by translators manipulated by various factors and behaviors in political news adaption result from the interaction of linguistic role and social roles. The socialization of political news adaption is a process of translator’s roles shifting from the linguistic role to social roles. Meanwhile the political news adaption also shifts from "pure linguistic translation" to "socialized translation"...
