The performance of the Microchannel Plates (MCP) and fluorescent screen assembly, which is one of the most important parts of the Low-light image intensifier, determines the quality of Low-light image intensifier directly. MCP is the core component of the Low-light image intensifier for its advantage as high electron multiplying. Fluorescent screen, as the direct source of low light level image for human eyes, become more and more important. With the test and analysis of the noise characteristics of the MCP and fluorescent screen assembly, the experimental basis to develop high-performance Low-light image intensifier will be put forward.Based on the study of the MCP, fluorescent screen working principle and structure characteristics, on the basis of fully simulating Low-light image intensifier noise test conditions, the test plan for the noise characteristics of the MCP and fluorescent screen assembly is designed. To test the noise characteristics of the MCP and fluorescent screen assembly, we improved the original test system, designed the test fixture, a set of optical system used for debugging and processing output light signal is designed. To gather the output signal, the signal acquisition system composed by high performance photomultiplier tube is designed. To analyze the digital signal, the digital signal processing software is programmed with Matlab. By the coordination of the software and hardware, the system can test the noise characteristic of MCP and fluorescent screen assembly. We designed a lot of comparison test experiments, tested the noise characteristic of the coated and not coated part of the MCP, tested the noise characteristic of the MCPs with the different thickness of ion barrier film. By comparing the test results, we analyzed the causes for the differences. The test experiments showed that the Signal-to-noise ratio and Noise spectrum are corresponded with the cause of the noise and the performance of the MCP and fluorescent screen assembly when it is working. We think the noise characteristic test system can test MCP and fluorescent screen assembly noise characteristics, the noise characteristic test can provide consultation to develop high-performance Low-light image intensifier.
