With the rapid development of network and communication technology, Internet becomes an indispensable part in our lives. However, with the continuous increase of the network size, there are a lot of problems in the conventional Internet, such as the larger and larger routing tables, QoS requestion of special services and users not to meet, more difficult network management and so on. To solve these problems, the concept of cognitive networks is presented. Cognitive networks have the abilities of self-aware, self-management, learning and reasoning. The performance and management can be optimized in cognitive networks.In this thesis, a kind of QoS routing protocol for cognitive networks is designed. The routing requestion is divided to different service types and different service levels to satisfy the QoS requested by regular services and users, and then it is mapped to QoS parameter intervals. In the networks, nodes have the ability of cognition, but links have not. Some cognitive behaviors are designed for nodes, such as sensation, sense of motion, memory, search, decision making, action, reasoning and explanation. The corresponding packets are designed for the cognitive behaviors to implement the interactions among nodes. Only local neighbor state and link state information is collected and maintained. Nodes don’t maintain global information of networks. Routing efficiency can be improved by maintaining and using experiential path information. The routing protocol is binded to a routing algorithm for the capability of routing in the network. The model of the protocol is established by using a Colored Petri Net (CPN) approach, and the properties of reachability, boundedness, correctness, automaticity, improvement and energy conservation are verified.The QoS routing protocol for cognitive networks designed in this thesis is implemented and deployed in prototype system. The practicality for this protocol is tested and verified with a video playback system. Some performance of the protocol is evaluated. The results show that the protocol designed in this thesis is feasible and effective.
