LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the evolution of3G radio network architectures of3GPP(3rd Generation Partnership Project), which can improve the primary air-interface via providing a higher transmission rate, reducing system latency and increasing system throughput. Relaying is considered for LTE-Advanced as a tool to improve e.g. the coverage of high data rate, group mobility, temporary network deployment, the cell-edge throughput and/or to provide coverage in new areas.Firstly, this thesis introduces the current research status of LTE standards, which includes the evolution target, protocol architecture and main physical transmission technology of LTE.Then, we summarize the origins and development of relay technology; introduce the principle of relay cooperation and some classical relay forwarding schemes, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various forwarding schemes. This thesis presents network coding based relay forwarding strategies. Combined the relay and network coding together, we regard relay as a node in transmission to improve the relay forwarding performance. Finally, we introduce the relay technology and its standardization progress, summarize the relay TS(technical specification) in3GPP. In order to combine the relay technology and network coding technology, we need to modify the control information. Combined with the content of LTE architecture, we design a relay scheduling process and signal system to support relay and network coding.
